Parent & Guardian FAQs
About Child & Adolescent Care
-
We provide psychiatric evaluation and medication management for children and adolescents ages 7 and older.
-
Our primary focus is medication management using a holistic approach. Brief supportive counseling may be included during visits when clinically appropriate. We do not provide ongoing weekly psychotherapy but are happy to collaborate with your child’s therapist or provide referrals if needed.
Parent Involvement
-
Yes. Parents or legal guardians participate in the initial evaluation and in treatment planning. Follow-up visits may include time with your child alone, time with parents or guardians, or both, depending on your child’s age and clinical needs.
-
Parents and guardians remain involved in treatment planning and medication decisions. While some session content may remain private for adolescents, care decisions are made collaboratively whenever possible.
-
Parents or legal guardians provide consent for treatment of minor children. Adolescents are encouraged to participate actively in treatment decisions and communication whenever possible.
Confidentiality & Safety
-
Confidentiality is handled based on a child’s age, developmental level, and clinical circumstances.
For younger children, parents or guardians are generally more directly involved in communication and care.
For adolescents, part of the visit may be conducted privately to support open and honest communication. Certain information discussed in private sessions is usually kept confidential to promote trust and effective treatment.
Parents or guardians will always be informed if there are concerns about safety or situations where disclosure is required by law. -
Some behaviors may be discussed privately if they do not place your child at immediate risk. If behaviors become dangerous or place your child at serious risk, parents or guardians will be informed to ensure safety.
-
When appropriate, the provider will encourage and support your child in sharing important concerns with you and may help facilitate these conversations.
Communication with Schools & Providers
-
Communication with other providers or schools typically requires permission from a parent or legal guardian. When the patient is an adolescent, the provider will also involve the patient in this decision whenever appropriate.
Information may be shared without permission only in situations involving safety concerns or when required by law.
